Austad's Pro Tip: "Most amateurs are playing a ball that’s too soft and spins too much off the tee. Understanding which ball is right for your game may help you find 10-15 extra yards with your driver simply by switching to a lower-spinning model that matches your swing speed."

- Ryan Austad, President

Feel the Austad's difference with a golf ball fitting

Are you playing the right ball? Most golfers aren't. Choosing a ball based on price or what the pros use can cost you distance and accuracy. A golf ball fitting Speaking with one of our Master Fitters can be a game-changer, and it'll help any golfer who wants to get better. Which is everyone!

We pair all custom club fittings with a golf ball analysis. Our Master Fitters will speak to you about your game before using launch monitors to capture your specific swing data. We then test different models to find the one that's optimized for your game in two key areas:

1.   Off the tee: Finding the right compression and cover to maximize ball speed, minimize spin, and optimize distance.

2.   Around the green: Ensuring the ball has the right cover (like soft urethane) to give you the spin and control you need for chips and pitches.

We don't just fit you into the most expensive ball; we fit you into the right ball.

Golf balls buying guide: 3 things to consider

1. Cover material: This is perhaps the most important difference and holds the key to spin control. Urethane covers on Tour performance balls are softer, giving you "check" and "bite" on our wedge shots. More affordable ionomer ball covers are harder and spin ess. This can mean more distance and help reduce slices or hooks off the tee.

2. Compression: This is a measure of how much the ball "squashes" at impact. Golfers with high swing speeds can activate high-compression balls (with multiple layers) for more distance. Golfers with slower or average swing speeds get greater distance and a better feel from a low-compression ball, typically known as a 2-piece or distance ball.

3. Price vs. performance: Don't just buy the ball the pros use. If you’re a high-handicap golfer who loses a few balls per round, playing a $5 ball can be stressful. A high-quality distance ball can provide you with the right level of control for your game and give you the confidence to take on the drink without fearing it'll cost you too much.

Golf Balls FAQs

Can a golf ball really make a difference?

Yes. It's the one piece of equipment you use for every shot. A softer ball designed for high spin may stop perfectly on a green, while a low-spin ball might roll off the back if your approach shot isn't perfect. The same goes for the driver—the right ball can reduce sidespin, leading to straighter drives.

How do you clean golf balls?

On the course, a damp towel is your best friend to remove dirt from golf balls and improve each shot. For a deep clean at home, let them soak for a few minutes in a bucket of warm water mixed with a little dish soap. Use a soft brush or cloth to wipe off dirt or grass, then rinse and towel dry.

What golf ball should I use?

The best way to know for sure is to book a golf ball fitting. Our experts will use launch monitor data to find the ball that optimizes your swing.

Without data, it's a guess. But if you feel like your drives "balloon" too high, you might need a lower-spinning ball.
If your chips don't stop on the green, you could benefit from a higher-spin, premium ball. A fitting finds the perfect balance and takes the guesswork out of the equation.

What do the numbers on golf balls mean?

They are simply for identification. The numbers (like 1, 2, 3, or 4) help you tell your ball apart from your playing partners' if they are using the same brand and model.
