Austad's Pro Tip: "The clubhead is what you see, but the shaft is what you feel. It's the part of the club that you influence the most. Having the wrong one rules out any chance of playing to your full potential. A custom fitting eliminates the guesswork, and our in-store experts will gladly help you understand what kind of shaft best fits your game."

- Matt Kettler, Director of Fitting

Feel the Austad's difference with expert golf club fitting

A custom fitting is the single fastest way to improve your game.

Our fitters use industry-leading launch monitor data to analyze your unique swing—your speed, attack angle, and club path. We are brand-agnostic and won't fit you into one brand. We dive into the data to find the perfect combination of clubhead, shaft, lie angle, and grip that will help you hit the ball farther, straighter, and more consistently.

A fitting isn't just for pros; it's for every golfer who wants to get better. We can fit you for a driver, wedge, or everything in your bag.

Golf clubs buying guide: 3 things to consider

  1. Grip thickness: It's the only part of the club you touch, but that doesn't stop many golfers from overlooking the grip. Too thin and you can lose control over the club, as well as setting yourself up for post-round hand pain. Too thick, and your inability to rotate will reduce your swing speed and hitting potential.
  2. Shaft flex and weight: You'll see terms like "regular", "stiff", and "X-stiff" that explain how the shaft will flex as you bring the clubhead down. But it's about more than just swing speed. The shaft's weight and kick-point control your launch angle and spin. A fitter finds the shaft that optimizes your numbers—something that's impossible to guess online.
  3. Hybrids vs. long irons: You don't need to fight clubs you can't hit. For many golfers, a hybrid (part-iron, part-wood) is far easier to launch high and land soft than a 3-, 4-, or 5-iron. A modern golf club set builds your bag around your strengths.

Golf Clubs FAQs

How do I know when it's time for new golf clubs?

There are two main reasons to change your clubs:

  • Wear: The grooves on your irons and wedges are worn down, which reduces spin and control. Check your driver regularly for signs of wear, too. It's the club that takes the most punishment in your bag and may need replacing more frequently.
  • Technology: If your clubs are more than five to seven years old, modern drivers and irons may offer you significant, measurable gains in distance and forgiveness.
How to measure golf club length?

The official way to measure is to place the club in its playing position (as it would sit at address) and measure along the shaft from the point where the heel touches the ground up to the top edge of the grip.

However, more important is knowing the right length for you. This is determined by your height, wingspan, and natural posture at address. Playing clubs that are too long or short forces you to change your swing to fit the club—it should always be the other way around. This is one of the first and most important things we check during a custom fitting.

How do I regrip a golf club?

You can regrip a club using a hook blade, double-sided tape, and grip solvent. But it can be a messy job, and it's easy to get wrong. A grip that's misaligned or has air bubbles can be a real distraction on the course.

All our retail locations offer professional regripping services. Just bring your clubs with you, and our experts will get them feeling like new, perfectly straight, and the job’s often done while you wait. It's the fastest way to make your old clubs feel brand new.

How do I clean a golf club?

Keeping your clubs clean is essential for performance. After cleaning, apply a small bit of metal polish and buff them to keep the club face smooth and ready for the next shot.

Irons & wedges: Use a soft-bristled brush and a bucket of warm water with a bit of dish soap. Let the clubheads soak for a few minutes to loosen dirt, but don't submerge the ferrules (the plastic piece connecting the head and shaft). Use the brush to clear all the dirt rom the grooves, then towel dry. Clean grooves are critical for generating spin and control.

Drivers, woods, & putters: Never soak these. Simply wipe the clubhead and face with a damp cloth and dry them thoroughly. Don't use a brush, as this could scratch the smooth surface of the club head.
